The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s AGM decided to serve show cause notices on Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab (both part of the first three editions of the IPL) for violating the terms and conditions of the franchise agreement and the Kochi franchise to incorporate its joint venture into a company within ten days.
“There’s no legal entity so far with regard to the Kochi franchise (won by Rendevouz Sports World at $333 million). There’s a dispute on share holding and sweat equity matters between the two groups in the five-member consortium. They are not able to resolve those issues. Both the groups have written to us (BCCI) saying that we should not recognise the other group. The BCCI cannot work with such a franchise. They have deposited $33 million (for IPL 2011), but we cannot deal with two groups. We have to take immediate action and this will depend on their replies. This will happen before the auction sometime in November,” said Shashank Manohar, President, BCCI.
Manohar went to the extent of saying that the BCCI will cancel their franchise in the event of not receiving an appropriate response to the show cause notice.
“We will give them a time frame. We cannot work with two groups. We may play (IPL season 4) with nine or even eight teams,” said Manohar.
Elected unopposed as President for the third year, Manohar began the press conference saying, “The AGM was a smooth affair. All decisions were unanimous. The AGM carried out amendments and brought down the term of office of the IPL Governing Council from five years to one year.”
No payment
The AGM decided that no payment shall be made to any member of the IPL GC. The three cricketers in the previous GC received Rs. 1 crore each for a year. I spoke to Ravi Shastri and he has agreed to work in honorary capacity. I have not spoken to either Sunil Gavaskar or Pataudi,” said Manohar, who has been authorised to get the consent of one more cricketer to work in honorary capacity in the GC. A handful of BCCI members said that Gavaskar is unlikely to be part of the new GC because of the no-payment resolution adopted at the AGM.
When asked to respond to reports that Gavaskar had asked for Rs. 5 crore or $1 million for an IPL season, Manohar said: “You have to ask Gavaskar.”
Kumble NCA chief
Apart from appointing standing and sub-committees and Anil Kumble as Chairman of the National Cricket Academy, the BCCI also decided to withdraw the civil suit filed against former BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya in 2006.
“The civil suit against him was with regard to the recovery of PILCOM money. We consulted Manojkumar Mukerjee (retired judge of the Supreme Court) and Soli Sorabjee and they felt that there was very little chance of the BCCI succeeding in the civil suit. The BCCI felt it was unnecessary to spend money on a litigation which the BCCI was not likely to succeed.
Mr. Dalmiya also applied for revocation of the expulsion notice of 2006 and that was also granted.”
Second Test at Hyderabad
The BCCI awarded the second Test (Nov. 12-16) against New Zealand to the Hyderabad Cricket Association.
In the revised schedule Jaipur and Baroda will stage the second and third one-day internationals against New Zealand. The AGM decided to cancel certain IPL related contracts and lodge a police complaint in connection with the sale of tickets by Ticket Genie and Visual Impact for security Vans
