Anil Kumble on Wednesday was appointed the chairman of the National Cricket Academy by the BCCI.

“Kumble is an excellent cricketer. He has the knowledge of the game and is Bangalore-based. So he can look after the academy very well,” BCCI president Shashank Manohar said on the decision taken at the annual general meeting.

“The Board has purchased about 50 acres of land in Bangalore where the Board is developing its academy. According to all of us, Kumble is the best choice for that post,” Manohar said.

When asked about his commintments when playing for IPL, Manohar replied “He does not work for 365 days for the Bangalore franchise, neither will he work for 365 days for the NCA. We have a director in Sandeep Patil to look after

Kumble on replacing Ravi Shastri, said “The way I see it, it’s an opportunity to put together a structure that will help in the development of young cricketers,” “The role of the NCA is not just to churn out cricketers, but to churn out really good personalities and well-rounded individuals.

“This is not something that will happen in a year or two. It’s a continuous process for various sets of cricketers, right from the youngsters who are in the NCA to those who come back to it at different stages.”

The position will help Kumble pursue his ambition of guiding India’s young cricketing talent.

“It will help that I’m still involved in that many of the youngsters around would have played either with me or against me. It will help that they have some sort of comfort level with me and that they can approach me if they need something,” Kumble said.

“There must be a pipeline in place for a fresh talent pool to emerge, but we must also make sure the present talent pool remains focussed, motivated and in the best physical and mental shape to keep delivering for the country,” he said.

Clijsters pulls out of China Open; Nadal breezes through in Thailand

(CNN) — US Open champion Kim Clijsters has been forced to pull out of next month’s China Open because of a foot infection.

In a statement on her website the Belgian said she had some moles removed from the sole of her right foot and the wound had become infected.

“I am very sorry to have to cancel for Beijing,” the 27-year-old said. “After I returned from New York, I had some moles removed. The operation had been planned for quite a while.

“However, the wound on my foot sole heals really bad. Therefore playing tennis is not possible.”

Clijsters has not played since winning her third US Open title in New York in September, but was scheduled to compete in the October 2-10 hard court tournament in Beijing.

She is hoping to return to action at the season-ending WTA Championships in Doha from October 25-31.

World number one Serena Williams will also not play at the China Open as she continues to recover from a cut to her right foot sustained in July.

Meanwhile, world number one Rafael Nadal began his Thailand Open campaign with a straightforward 6-1 6-4 victory over Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 6-1 6-4.

The Spaniard was competing in his first event since completing a career grand slam at the US Open earlier this month.

Nadal’s compatriot Fernando Verdasco, the second seed, suffered a shock 6-4 6-4 defeat to Benjamin Becker of Germany.

Elsewhere, Robin Soderling and Tomas Berdych both made routine progress at the Malaysian Open on Thursday.

Swedish top seed Soderling, the two-time French Open finalist, crushed Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 6-0, 6-1 in a match which lasted just 62 minutes.

Berdych of the Czech Republic, the 2010 Wimbledon finalist, beat Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4.

Soderling will face eighth seed Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals, while Berdych meets David Ferrer of Spain.

Modi can make a comeback: Bindra – Indian Premier League | IPL T20 …

The former chairman and commissioner of IPL Lalit Modi has yet again found support from former BCCI and current Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) President I S Bindra.

“I have never believed that anyone can be marginalized for ever. Everyone is bound to make a comeback,” Bindra told the reporters during an interaction on Thursday.

He was speaking in reference to BCCI’s decision to completely shun Modi from Board’s activities including revamping the IPL governing council.

Bindra cited Jagmohan Dalmiya’s example, who was once the biggest enemy of the board and has now been cleared off all charges during the AGM in Mumbai on Wednesday.

“My friend Mr Dalmiya is back. So you can’t say that you can keep someone out forever,” he said.

Bindra and BCCI treasurer M P Pandove who is secretary of PCA also clarified that despite BCCI removing Modi from all important posts, he will remain PCA’s vice-president.

“The board is investigating all charges against Modi. As far as PCA is concerned, he remains one of our vice-presidents,” Pandove informed.

Meanwhile, Bindra played down the issue of former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar not retained in the IPL Governing Council and subsequently not informed about his removal.

“Sunil is not a part of the board. As a PCA president, I am a part of the board. Sunil has freedom of expression and accordingly he has said that he is surprised,” Bindra said.

The PCA has got 44 acres of land to built another state of the art stadium in New Chandigarh. Bindra, who is not keeping well these days, said that once the stadium takes shape, he plans to quit as a cricket administrator in 2012.

[Beauty Overheard] So Yes, Serena Williams is a Nail Tech Now …

Serena Williams Goes to Nail School

We touched on this yesterday (when Jezebel posted the video over here), but I think Serena Williams giving Oprah a pedicure deserves a closer look-see, don’t you?

First, we’ll deal with the obvious: Serena Williams is going to beauty school and blogging about it (over at Global Grind). This is going to have you asking some questions. Like, how do I handle being so awesome that even international tennis sensations are copying me? Understandable. I wonder that, too.

But it’s important to remember that as much we have in common (beauty school, blogging, awesomeness), Serena and I can be different too. For instance, the tennis thing. And Serena has her own special reasons for going to beauty school:

No one likes getting their nails done more than I do.  As a matter of fact I go every 4 days to get a manicure and every 7 days for a pedicure. So, I had a brilliant idea to get certified to be a nail tech. Besides the fact that I am coming out with a nail collection from a company called HairTech, I thought “Serena this is a no brainer.”

At first I wasn’t so sure about this — did some marketing team dream up nail school as a stunt to promote this forthcoming nail collection? (You can add to your list of “Reasons Why Serena and Virginia Are Not the Same” the fact that I do not have a forthcoming nail collection, or any other beauty product deals, per the BSP Product Policy.)

But I felt better when I saw the photo above (also from Global Grind, where Serena has posted all kinds of fun in-school action shots). Because dude — that is so beauty school. Right down to the lame uniform and the rundown strip mall location. Scrubs (or cheesy aprons or faux lab coats or whatever else they make you wear) are a great equalizer. If Serena is so passionate about nails that she can do 240 hours of that, more power to her.

So back to the Oprah interview. It’s pretty funny to hear Serena talk about trying to be anonymous at nail school. (You know. On national television.) To clarify matters: The school must know who she is, because you have to show your driver’s license when you enroll. And teachers are going to call you by name. So the people she’s deflecting with “if I have a dollar for every time I heard that!” must be mostly random folks coming up to her in the hallway or whatever, not her direct classmates.

The interview gets weirder when Oprah calls her on that: “I think you actually do have a dollar for every time you’ve heard that.” Because, oh right, the other difference between Serena and me/all other beauty schoolers everywhere, is that she’s filthy rich. And Oprah wants to check in about that (“Now who handles all of your money? Who’s taking care of that?”) and make sure Serena is following her fellow-filthy-rich-person advice. (Serena: “You told me to make sure I sign every check.” Oprah, dead serious: “Yes.” Serena: “And I never forgot that.”)

Then they talk about love, and Oprah explains, “Men want to feel that they’re needed. They need to feel important. And…it’s very hard to do that with a powerful woman.”

And that’s where I got stuck. Because I’m down with Serena doing beauty school. And I’m digging the girlfriend-bonding vibe they have while she works on Oprah’s toes. I think for most of us who love beauty treatments, that’s a big part of it, whether you’re dishing with your friend in the spa chair next to you, or at home while she dyes your hair in the kitchen sink. And I hope Oprah chats so freely with the people she actually pays to give her pedicures.

But I’m thinking maybe she wouldn’t use the word “powerful.” To describe most of the women who scrub her feet.
