2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe 6MT Test Drive and Review – Yahoo! News

BMW has its M. Mercedes-Benz has its AMG. Even Cadillac has its V. Now Infiniti steps up to the plate with its IPL.

“IPL” stands for “Infiniti Performance Line,” and 2011 represents its debut. Actually, the IPL G Coupe represents the entirety of the IPL lineup for the time being, though Infiniti promises that more vehicles will join the party in the near future.

The IPL G Coupe is based on the Infiniti G37 Coupe Journey (list prices starting at $38,600), which has been in the Infiniti lineup since 2008. The IPL treatment affects pretty much every aspect of the vehicle, from exterior modifications to interior enhancements to special engine, suspension and exhaust tuning. The price of this remodeled machine is $48,900 ($49,195 as tested), including Infiniti’s 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, 6-year/70,000 powertrain warranty and an EPA estimate of 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway (6MT)/19 city/27 highway (7AT).

I’m a pretty big fan of the G37 Coupe to begin with, so I approached the IPL with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. It’s very easy to bolt a few parts on a car and call it “performance,” and I was afraid that’s what I’d find. Giving the exterior a good examination, I discovered mild IPL tweaks, including aerodynamic front and rear fasciae, side sills and a tastefully integrated rear spoiler. Big, round chromed dual exhaust pipes poke out from beneath the rear skirt, promising delightful noise. My IPL wore a coat of Graphite Shadow paint. The only other available IPL color is Malbec Black. After poring over the IPL’s exterior, I breathed a sigh of relief. The IPL takes the G37 Coupe formula and kicks it up a notch, but without resorting to exaggeration. It’s a muscular, yet elegant design that evokes true sports car visions. You would be excused for mistaking the IPL for a Porsche 911 at a quick glance (a very quick glance, but still…).

Slide into the IPL’s cabin, and the car envelops you in a purpose-built environment. Both front seats have adjustable thigh extensions, and the driver’s seat gets power lumbar support and adjustable torso and thigh bolstering. The interior trim is machined aluminum instead of plastic or wood, which gives the IPL a very sporty feel. Infiniti is great at fit and finish, and every detail within the cabin is top notch.

The second row is for kids and briefcases only. I was able to crawl back there to test it out, but I wouldn’t want to get trapped.

So, the IPL looks like a sports car outside and in. But a sports car is about performance.

Under the hood lurks Infiniti’s 3.7-liter V6. Tuning and a freer-flowing exhaust system force an additional 18 hp and 6 lb-ft of torque out of the engine (which is the same powerplant you’ll find in a G37), for a total of 348 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque. Peak power comes on later, at 7,400 rpm vs. 7,000 rpm, unexpectedly high revolutions for a rather beefy engine. My test vehicle came with a six-speed manual transmission (a seven-speed automatic is also available). The combination of the free-revving V6, a feather-light clutch and precise gear feel makes the IPL a rocket to drive. The sensation of speed is nearly irresistible from a stop, and the transmission rewards good footwork with slick shifting. The IPL doesn’t require any heel/toe fancy stuff — it’s got great synchros, and power gets to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential. All of which is to say, the IPL is a blast to drive in a straight line, and not too onerous in traffic — which is where most of your driving will take place.

When the road gets curvy, the IPL really shows its stuff. Infiniti isn’t too specific about the upgrades that went into suspension and steering, but the IPL feels sharper and sportier than the G37, which is already pretty sharp and sporty itself. Upsized brake rotors are standard on the IPL (an option on the G37), and cool 19″ staggered wheels (8.5″ front/9.0″ rear) give good footing.

The IPL includes just about every option that’s available for a G37 as standard equipment, including Bose audio, navigation, Bluetooth, keyless ignition and more, which makes the $10,000 premium over the G37’s price seem pretty reasonable. The only option that you can get on a G37 that you can’t get on the IPL is all-wheel drive, which is kind of a bummer. The IPL is fun to drive with its front engine/rear drive setup, but it would really be a monster in the curves with all-wheel drive. I suppose there would be some parasitic loss in the process of distributing power to all four wheels, which might make the IPL look like less of a sports car on paper.

Compared to the various competitors, the IPL looks like a bargain. The BMW M3 Coupe starts at $58,900 with 414 hp, but it doesn’t have nearly the feature list. The Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Sedan starts at $58,200 with a 451 hp V8 (and an extra pair of doors). The Lexus IS-F Sedan starts at $60,660 with a 416 hp V8 (and those pesky extra doors, too). The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe starts at $63,660 with a 556 hp supercharged V8 — hey, wait a minute! That sounds like fun!

The absence of a V8 and all-wheel drive may put some drivers off, but the IPL packs plenty of punch for my taste and for most public driving. For the money, the 2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe delivers a great ride, beautiful design, and daily drivability in a sports car package.

Gayle snapped by Sydney for Aussie T20

Hard hitting West Indies batsman Chris Gayle will play for Sydney Thunder in Australia’s revamped domestic Twenty20 tournament.
The swashbuckling 31 year old, who top scored in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Bangalore Royal Challengers earlier this year, was signed immediately after a pla

yer contracting window opened on Thursday for the eight team “Big Bash” league.

“I am thrilled to be able to come to Sydney and play for the Thunder,” left hander Gayle said on Cricket New South Wales’s website (www.cricketnsw.com.au). “Having worked well with John Dyson in the West Indies, I was impressed with his plans for the Thunder and I think the team will have a great chance to win this competition,” added Jamaican Gayle, referring to the Australian former West Indies coach and general manager of Thunder.

Gayle had played the last two T20 seasons for Western Australia, but turned down a A$250,000 ($267,000) offer to remain in the state with Perth Scorchers, local media said.

Australia’s cricket administrators hope the T20 tournament can replicate the success of the IPL and rejuvenate domestic cricket after years of flagging interest.

The tournament features eight teams based on city identities for the first time in a departure from the state-based format of its first six years. The teams can sign up to two overseas players out of a minimum 14 over the three-week contracting window.

Ganguly warns of England bowling threat

Posted by observer | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 30-06-2011-05-2008

Hong Kong: Indian legend Sourav Ganguly warned the world champions on Wednesday they would come away second-best from their tour of England unless they pulled out all the stops.

India are looking to wrap up their second straight Test series victory over West Indies and create a piece of history by becoming the first Indian side to win a Test and One-day International series in the Caribbean.

But 39-year-old Ganguly, widely regarded as one of his country’s most successful captains and among the greatest batsmen of all time, said next month’s England tour would be an altogether more difficult prospect.

“We toured England in 2007… I was a part of the tour, an important member of the side, and we won the series. We were the only side which beat England other than Australia in the last 20 years,” said the left-hander, in Hong Kong to promote the International Cricket Council’s annual conference.

“So India has beaten England in the recent past in a test series but that doesn’t guarantee a win this time.”

“England have done well, England are doing well, but it’s going to be a series between two top teams and both of them have to be at their best if they want to win the series.”

India embark on a two-and-a-half month tour of England in July and will play four Test matches, five ODIs and two Twenty20 matches.

Ganguly pointed to England’s potent bowling attack, singling out Stuart Broad, Chris Tremlett and James Anderson as the main threats.

“India is dominating the West Indies but… we know they are not the best team in the world and India is the number one test team in the world,” he said.

“England, in England, will be good, will be hard. Their bowling attack looks alright with Broad, Tremlett and Anderson. It’s going to be a good series.”

India are touring the West Indies without star players Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan.

The five, all part of India’s World Cup winning team, played for their Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, and Sachin, Zaheer and skipper Dhoni have been rested for the West Indies series while Sehwag, Gambhir and Yuvraj are missing the tour on medical grounds.

Indian media have highlighted concerns that the Test side is being undermined by the glitzy IPL but Ganguly said the Test team would always come first.

“Test cricket is the best form of cricket,” said the so-called “Prince of Calcutta”. “Watch the series when India goes to England. It’s going to be full houses at every venue. India goes to Australia in the winter and that’s going to be full houses.

“Test cricket will always be the best and the most important form of cricket.”

'Can't have affair with Brett Lee every year'

Posted by observer | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 30-06-2011-05-2008

Preity Zinta is still smarting over reports of a dinner date with Brett Lee that ended with her sneaking out of the back door of the Bandra nightspot, Olive, after she was spotted.
“I’ve never come out of Olive’s back door, ever. Why would I need to do that when I’m single and not seeing anyone

? And just to set the record straight, I was there for dinner with another friend and Brett joined us. But obviously the person who spotted us together, didn’t spot him,” she grouses.

She admits that she’s known the Aussie cricketer for the past seven years. He’s played in her team, Kings XI Punjab, for three seasons and only this year moved to Shah Rukh Khan’s franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders.

“But he still remains a friend, a dear friend. When I was going through a personal issue, he stood by me. Ditto for me. He’s a great guy, plays the guitar and loves movies,” she smiles.

Friend? Not a good friend? A frown replaces the dimples, “How can I have an affair with Brett every year only during the IPL season? What happens during the rest of the year? Why can’t a man and a woman have platonic relationship? Why does it always have to be romantic? I’ve never had an affair with anyone I have worked with, whether it’s a co-star or a cricketer.”

‘Yuvi reminds me of my younger brother’

There’ve been rumours about Preity and her former Kings XI Punjab captain, Yuvraj Singh, too.

ZintaShe says exasperatedly, “Yuvi’s always reminded me of my younger brother. But I guess others see the equation differently. He’s a sweet guy… Little different but a lot of fun.”

Last season, he switched sides to captain Pune Warriors and played a cameo against the Kings XI Punjab, leading to their defeat. Yet, his former mentor was all smiles at the prize distribution.

“I wanted to strangle him. When he was playing for us, he never got going at Mohali. Even during the World Cup he scored a duck. But that one match he had to score and take us down,” she says in mock anger.

“But it’s just a game, you lose some, you win some.”

Any chances of Yuvraj returning to her team?

“You never know, life’s unpredictable. This year because of the court case we couldn’t bid for him during the auctions. But we got Gilly (Adam Gilchrist), a ‘legend’. Earlier we’d given Shaun Marsh to Team Australia, this year we gave Paul Valthaty to Team India.”
