New Delhi: Defending his son Sidhartha’s remarks on the woman allegedly molested by an Australian player Luke Pomersbach that have drawn widespread criticism, Royal Challengers Bangalore owner Vijay Mallya said he is not a child and has tweeted his impressions about the “lady’s conduct”.

“He is not a child. He can defend himself. He said what he said. Twitter is a global forum and he has been tweeting for a while and he has his set of followers,” Mallya senior told NDTV when asked whether his son’s tweets were appropriate.

Seeking to question the character of the woman Zohal Hamid, Sidhartha had tweeted,” “She was all over me last night and asked for my BBM pin, so if he was her fiance, she wasn’t exactly behaving like a future wife.”

Asked whether he had a chance to speak to Luke Pomersbach, Mallya senior said, “No I haven’t. This could have been probably one of the late night brawls. But we at RCB has always said that law should take its own course.”

Mallya also feels that the recent sting operation, the brawl at Wankhede involving Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and this Pomersbach episode won’t affect the brand IPL.

“Absolutely not. All sorts of incidents happen. There are doping incidents in Olympics. There are brawls galore in football matches in European leagues which continue to be extremely popular. For me, Chris Gayle’s innings was a spectacular one.”

Mallya, however, made it clear that Pomersbach won’t play till the investigations are on.

SRK-MCA officials fracas: Mamata Banerjee, Bollywood back Shah Rukh Khan; IPL …

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) decided on Friday to ban Shah Rukh Khan from entering Wankhede stadium for a period of 5 years.

MCA took this decision after Shah Rukh Khan was involved in a late night brawl with MCA official at Wankhede stadium on Wednesday.

The managing committee held a special meeting to decide about this ban. The meeting happened under the Chairmanship of Union Minister and MCA President Vilasrao Deshmukh and unanimously voted in favour of a ban.

MCA’s meeting lasted for about an hour where all members and senior police officers who were there at the Wankhede on Wednesday night were present.

MCA President Vilasrao Deshmukh read out the committee’s resolution at the end of the meeting. Mr. Deshmukh said, “The managing committee of Mumbai Cricket association condemns the abusive behavior of Mr. Shah Rukh Khan on Wednesday night at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. He hurled abuses at senior MCA officials and manhandled guards. Mr. Khan has shown no regret got his acts and has tried to justify manhandling of the security staff. The managing committee is forced to ban Shah Rukh Khan from entering Wankhede stadium for a period of 5 years”.

Speaking to ET after the meeting Mr. Deshmukh said “We wanted to send out a stern message to everyone. Whether you are a celebrity or a political leader or anyone else, the rules have to be followed at a cricket ground. This is a ground where international matches happen. We cant allow guest to walk all over the place before or after the match. What the security guards and MCA officials did was completely justified. They wanted people to get off the ground but since people were not listening they had to be drive them out”.

Mr. Deshmukh said that the managing committee has decided that Shah Rukh Khan cannot enter the stadium for the next five years; it’s a unanimous decision. He can not come even as a spectator to the ground.

There was a proposal of a life-time ban, but we want to send a message that this is not how one should behave. Nobody can support such behaviour, be it BCCI, IPL, MCA.”

Pomersbach given a day’s bail

New Delhi: Australian cricketer Luke Pomersbach, arrested on charges of molesting an American woman in a hotel last night, was today granted interim bail for a day by a Delhi court.

There was drama during the 30-minute proceedings, when the 27-year-old batsman, playing for Royal Challengers, Bangalore, in the IPL, complained of uneasiness and fainted while the victim broke down when she narrated the incident.

Policemen took him outside the court room and gave him water after which he regained composure to come back to the court room made stuffy by the crowd of lawyers, journalists and onlookers.

Pomersbach, who has had a history of brawls and brush with police in his country, and accused of outraging the modesty of a woman here last night after a post-match party, was granted relief by Metropolitan Magistrate Navita Kumari Bagha till tomorrow.

The Magistrate directed the Delhi Police to bring the CCTV footage from the hotel tomorrow along with the medical records showing the nature of injury caused to the woman’s fiance Sahil, who is admitted in ICU in a private hospital here after being allegedly beaten by Pomersbach.

“The accused is granted interim bail till tomorrow,” the magistrate said. “Bring the CCTV footage of the hotel and the doctors opinion about the nature of the injuries sustained by him (the woman’s fiancee Sahil),” the court said.

During the hearing, the court asked the Delhi police as to why they had not secured the CCTV footage of the hotel. Delhi Police had sought that the court should sent the cricketer into judicial custody. The woman narrated the sequence of the event saying that she was with her fiance and Pomersbach forcibly entered their room in the hotel to have drinks and molested her.

“Sahil only told him ‘please leave the room’ and he (Pomersbach) turned and started assaulting him and punched him (Sahil) several times on his face,” she said. Delhi Police submitted that  Pomersbach misbehaved with the woman and assaulted Sahil, who received injury.

The woman told the court that despite being beaten severely the case has been registered under section 323 of the IPC for simple hurt. “The injuries are grievous and the police have charged him just under Section 323 of the IPC.. Sahil was beaten so badly that he is in the ICU,” the woman told the court.

Advocate Neeraj Chaudhary, who appeared for Pomersbach, vehemently opposed the police version and said that Sahil has not not been admitted to the ICU and Pomersbach was instead beaten up by him. “Pomersbach was beaten up by Sahil in the room. There was no previous rivalry between them. They (Sahil and the woman) had invited Pomersbach to their room,” the counsel said adding that his client was not carrying any arms with him.

On this, the woman said, “for molestation, you do not need a pistol or any other arms.”The woman told the court that after the Royal Challengers, Bangalore, won the IPL match yesterday, a party was going on at the hotel where she was with Sahil.

She said Pomersbach “tagged” along with them and said that he wanted to come for drinks with them. When he came she went to her bedroom to sleep but Pomersbach came from behind and tried to kiss her on which Sahil intervened and asked the cricketer to go out.

At this, Pomersbach assaulted Sahil and beat him up badly. “Sahil is very serious and is admitted to the ICU. He (Sahil) just tried to save me and that is how he was hurt,” she said.

Counsel for Pomersbach, however, denied the allegation and said that the cricketer has also got his hand fractured in the last night’s incident. He said that Pomersbach was invited by Sahil and his

fiancee to their room and they had gone there together. “Why the police has not taken the CCTV footage of the hotel. It will be crystal clear from the footage that whether Pomersbach had gone there forcibly or they (Sahil and his fiance) had taken him with them,” the lawyer said. PTI

Needed: Code of Conduct for IPL team owners

Posted by observer | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 19-05-2012-05-2008

0

Bangalore, May 17: These are bad times for the Indian Premier League (IPL). Just two days after the spot-fixing allegations, a team owner has got into trouble and is banned from entering a stadium.

On Wednesday night, Kolkata Knight Riders’ owner Shahrukh Khan, reportedly, got into a scuffle with Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials and security personnel at the Wankhede Stadium. This was after KKR had won their game against the Mumbai Indians.

MCA officials were quoted as saying that the Bollywood actor was banned for life from entering the famous Wankhede Stadium, where India won the 2011 World Cup.

This is not the first time a team owner has got into trouble during IPL 5. Earlier, this season, Kings XI Punjab co-owner Preity Zinta got into an argument with match officials over a batsman’s dismissal.

Preity, upset by umpire’s decision, chargers onto the field and questioned the match officials over that decision. It required Adam Gilchrist to intervene and pull Preity away.

After that incident at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla had asked for a report from the officials concerned. But, we haven’t heard anything after that. Is the matter dead and buried?

Can owner’s get any with whatever they do? Why is IPL mum on such happenings?

Why was Preity not censured? Why is IPL and BCCI quiet on Shahrukh’s misbehaviour at the Wankhede?

There were also reports that Shahrukh was in an “inebriated” state. MCA has taken action as they are the host association of Wankhede Stadium.

BCCI and IPL have to put in place certain code of conduct for franchise owners as well. In one of the earlier editions too, Shahrukh was questioned for sitting in the dugout with KKR players. He was also on the wrong side of the law, smoking in public places.

If Shahrukh is found guilty of misbehaviour at the stadium, BCCI should take strict action, which will keep other owners and their entourage in check at all venues.

After all, IPL is cricket and let us focus only on the players and the games rather than scuffles off the field. Cricketers deserve all the attention and adulation, not the owners.

One can never imagine football club owners taking the spotlight away from the players. Big English Premier League owners or any other club owners quietly watch the action far away from the pitch and make their way out. There, it is only about players and coaches. In India, too much attention is being paid to team owners.

Let the owners work for the success of the team behind the scenes. Let them not get into any altercations with ground personnel. At the end of the day, IPL owners do not own the ground.

Kolkata edge closer to IPL playoffs

Kolkata Knight Riders all but secured their place in the Indian Premier League playoffs with a 32-run win over Mumbai Indians.

The visitors, put into bat, made just 140 for 7 but their spinners strangled the Mumbai batsmen on a a pitch offering turn and bounce to dismiss them for 108 in 19.1 overs with Sachin Tendulkar the top scorer with 27 off 24 balls.

Left-arm spinners Shakib-al-Hasan (1-25) and Iqbal Abdulla (1-22) justified their inclusion in the side while off-spinner Sunil Narine continued his good run claiming 4-15 in 3.1 overs to earn the Purple Cap.

Pacer L Balaji took 2-11 in his four overs and Jacques Kallis hammered in the final nails in the coffin with 2-32.

Mumbai began the chase in their customary sedate fashion making 26 runs and losing Herschelle Gibbs (13 off 24) off the final ball of the sixth over.

But the much-needed impetus never came for the hosts as Narine cleaned up Tendulkar (27 off 24) with a ball that came in sharply and took the leg stump.

Six runs later, Mumbai were 66-3 in the 13th over as Dinesh Karthik pulled Balaji to Pathan at fine leg before Rohit Sharma (12 off 14) and Ambati Rayudu (11 off 8) added 17 runs.

With the asking rate climbing higher every over, Rayudu charged down to Shakib in the 16th over and was smartly stumped by Brendon McCullum.

And 13 runs later, Mumbai’s chase suffered a major blow when Kallis dismissed Kieron Pollard (8 off 5) and Dwayne Smith off successive deliveries.

Narine then returned in the next over to send back Harbhajan Singh (1 off 2) and Sharma and got rid of RP Singh in the final over to seal the win after Balaji had dismissed Lasith Malinga (8 off 6) in the penultimate over.

Kolkata would not have expected to win by such a margin after managing a below-par total thanks to some good display of pace bowling from Munaf Patel (1-17), Rp Singh (2-33), Pollard (1-20) and Dwayne Smith (1-8).

Manoj Tiwary was the top scorer with 41 off 43 balls while Gautam Gambhir made 27 off 23 balls and Yusuf Pathan remained unbeaten on 21 from as many balls.

The win takes Kolkata to 19 points from 15 games, a tally that can take them to the play-offs unless results in other matches go against them and a win in their final game will definitely secure their qualification.

Mumbai are on 18 points and need to win their last game to ensure qualification without having to worry about net run rates.

New Delhi
Five uncapped Indian players were today suspended with immediate effect pending completion of an inquiry as a rattled BCCI cracked the whip on tainted cricketers in the wake of a television sting operation which claimed to have exposed corruption in the cash-rich IPL.

The strong action to suspend Mohnish Mishra, Shalabh Srivastava, T P Sudhindra, Amit Yadav and Abhinav Bali was taken after a lengthy tele-conference of top BCCI officials and members of the IPL’s Governing Council.

The BCCI decided to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the incident by Ravi Sawani, the former chief of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit who is now heading the BCCI’s newly set-up Anti-Corruption Unit.

“The IPL Governing Council met on teleconference today at 2:30pm and they recommended to the BCCI President for strict action against those players who were found guilty and found suspicious on the television footage shown on India TV,” IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla told reporters here.

“Since it also involved matter relating to other matches and previous IPL, it was referred to the President. The president after due consideration has decided to have a preliminary inquiry for which a commissioner has been appointed. Mr Ravi Sawani who was the ICC ACSU chief and now advisor will conduct the inquiry and he will submit a report to the Disciplinary Committee,” he said.

“Pending inquiry the five players have been suspended from all cricket activities with immediate effect. We will await the report of the preliminary inquiry and proper action will be taken only after that,” he added.

Television channel India TV yesterday claimed to have blown the lid off “murky deals” in the IPL among players, organisers, owners and big guns of Indian cricket.

That some tough measures would be taken against the players was evident when the BCCI president N Srinivasan, who is currently at Kodaikanal, made it clear that no player would be spared if found guilty.

He admitted that he was surprised by the sting operation reiterated the BCCI’s zero tolerance towards corruption in cricket.

“We will not tolerate this nonsense. We have zero tolerance on corruption and you will not be disappointed by the action we take,” he said.

“Some evidence have been found against some players,” he added.

The TV sting operation which was aired at prime time yesterday created a flutter in the Indian cricket establishment prompting the BCCI to react quickly. It took less than 24 hours for the cricket body to take action against the players.

The channel had claimed it had done a sting operation in which many players confessed on hidden camera they get much more than their prescribed auction under the table.

According to the channel, its operation also revealed that spot-fixing is not only prevalent in IPL but also that first class matches are fixed and women played an important role in match-fixing.

The IPL’s Governing Council had sought video footage from the TV channel and is understood to have scrutinised the tapes before taking the decision of suspending the players.

Four of the five players suspended had played in the

rebel Indian Cricket League.

Medium pacer Sudhindra, who had played for Delhi Giants in the ICL, helped Madhya Pradesh gain promotion to Ranji Trophy’s Elite Division in the 2010-11 season. He surprised everyone in his first season in the big league, ending the 2011-12 season as its highest wicket-taker and earning himself a contract with the Deccan Chargers in the IPL.

Madhya Pradesh middle-order batsman Mishra too played for the Delhi Giants in the rebel Indian Cricket League before gaining amnesty form the BCCI. Signed by Deccan Chargers in 2010, 28-year-old Mishra moved to the newly-formed Pune Warriors in 2011.

Uttar Pradesh left-arm seamer Srivastava was India’s highest wicket-taker at the victorious Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2000. After severing ties with ICL team Delhi Giants, Srivastava was signed up by Kings XI Punjab in 2011.

22-year-old Yadav, an all-rounder, bats right-handed and bowls off-spin for Goa. He has played 14 first-class matches, scoring three half centuries and taking 41 wickets at 23.75. Yadav is on Kings XI Punjab’s roster but hasn’t made his IPL debut yet.

Left-arm spinner Bali, who was with Delhi Giants in the ICL, had played 13 first class matches and he is currently not in any IPL team.

Srivastava claimed that he was innocent and would put forward his side of story before the inquiry commissioner.

“I deny the charges but don’t want to say anything more as of now. I will put forward my views before the inquiry commissioner. I will wait for that. I respect the BCCI,” he said.
